3rd Chakra

The third of the seven chakras of the human body is called the Manipura. This is a Sanskrit word that means ‘lustrous gem’. The chakra is located in the solar plexus, navel and digestive system region and is the seat of the intellect.

This is the chakra that is associated with power, vitality, self control, discipline and self-esteem. People with a strong 3rd chakra tend to display characteristics like a purpose in life, a career, inner strength and self confidence. The glands and organs associated with the chakra are the pancreas and the digestive system. This is why one starts developing digestive problems with an imbalance in the 3rd chakra.

Color, element and emotion of the third chakra

Fire is the element of the 3rd chakra. However if there is too much of heat in the 3rd chakra region, one may start developing digestive problems. It is possible to stimulate the 3rd chakra using bikram yoga or hot yoga. However one has to make sure that the chakra does need some stimulation before doing Bikram yoga.

Yellow and gold are the colors of the chakra. So when the chakra is imbalanced, it is possible to bring it back to balance by concentrating on yellow or golden things like gold and candle flames,  by wearing more of yellow clothes and eating more yellow fruits and vegetables like bananas, squash and peaches.

Anger is the emotion displayed by the third chakra. So an excessive 3rd chakra leads to excessive attention to power, status and recognition, anger and hatred. This can be subdued with passive yogic backbends.

Sight and cognitive thinking is the sense for the 3rd chakra. The intellect is also found here, and is where some people get a ‘gut feeling’ from while making decisions. Wearing gemstones like tiger’s eye, gold, peridot, chalcedony, yellow sapphire, yellow topaz or gold calcite can all help in stimulating and balancing the chakra. Yogic poses that help stimulate and balance the 3rd chakra are the half boat pose, twists, sun salutations and warrior.

Consequences of blocked 3rd chakra

The common health problems that arise from a blocked third chakra are ulcers, diabetes, hypoglycemia, digestive problems, over-sexuality, depression, muscle cramps, eating disorders, skin disorders and problems in spleen, kidneys, pancreas and nerve tissue.

With so many health problems arising from a blocked third chakra, experts state that there health complications can lead to some people getting obsessed with power and control on everyone and everything around them.

However if the manipura chakra is free and in balance, the person gains self-esteem, spontaneity, vitality and develops an ego identity. They develop a strength that stems from the center of the body in the solar plexus region that makes them feel as if they belong everywhere.

Besides, a balanced chakra leads to the harmonious working of the digestion, assimilation and metabolism of food. As people with a strong third chakra are basically strong in their feet, experts do agree that some of the best dancers have a powerful third chakra.
